O2 announce landline and freephone numbers for mobile

22 Aug 2009 — o2, telephony, voip

This could open up avenues for cheaper international call routing over VOIP,Skype and similar. The availability of the various regions seems much like Google Voice (not currently available in the UK), and it’d be a good omen for Voice in the UK if there’s now a non-geographical way to allocate local numbers. My guess is that the numbers are made possible by O2’s wide presence in local exchanges for its local-loop unbundled broadband service.
